2011-09-12 Jim's hike at Neys

Monday

Jim hiked some of the trails at Neys while Mary and Buffy lazed around camp.

We stopped at the visitor Center in the afternoon – the ranger told us a storm was coming across the lake. We could see the clouds off on the horizon. So we battened down the camper, closed windows, etc. and drove into Marathon. Marathon is the biggest city we’ve seen the Sault. And many of the streets have familiar names – names from home – names of the lumbers barons. We did some grocery shopping and sight seeing, then drove back. Rain started before we got home.

The evening was very stormy. Great streaks of lightning over the lake, lots of thunder and wind. Sounded like some hail as well. We worried about our new vents, but they came through just fine.

2011-09-11 Neys P. P.

Sunday

10th anniversary of 9/11. Probably not a good day to be crossing borders. We don’t have to worry about that as we are going to other way.

Our solid blue sky was suddenly mostly cloudy before we were half way to Wawa. And the road was wet in places as we drove along. Most of today’s route was inland – no lake views most of the way. Still on highway 17.

Neys P.P. is along the lake. We found a site in the first campground – all pull-throughs. We are on the row closest to the water. The waves here are bigger and louder than at Agawa. Got some sunset pictures before the clouds blocked the view.

2011-09-10 -Jim's Awausee Trail Trek - and Buffy

Saturday

Another sunny day. Jim hiking alone today… Buffy and I are being lazy at camp. Jim hiked the Awausee Trail up a high bluff. Great views of the lake. He arrived back at camp tired but happy to have been able to do the climb.

Buffy and I walked around the campgrounds, met some more campers and then just lazed around. Tomorrow we leave Agawa and head north and west around the top of the lake.

2011-09-09 Sand River/Agawa Bay

09 Friday

Another beautiful day! We hiked along the Sand River – Pinguisibi trail – saw 2 really pretty waterfalls. Buffy loves the walks – hates to be left in the truck. We drove another rough gravel road to lake Mijinemungshing where there is a canoe landing. Lots of cars in the parking area, but not a person in site. The lake is large, many branches and bays and clear as glass.

Campfire with neighbors and some camp staff in the evening.

2011-09-08 Agawa Bay Camp

09-08 Thursday

Nice day. Road trip to Frater… an old railway stop on a rough gravel road. Then on to hike the Agawa Rocks and see the pictographs. The trail leads down the rocks, right along the shore. Saw the pictographs – without falling in the water. Then on to Wawa, the biggest town in the area. We found all 3 of the goose sculptures and drove back to camp.

2011-09-07 Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway

Wednesday

We said good-bye to Tahquaenon S.P. this morning. We drove along the lake on the Whitefish Bay Scenic Bayway, stopped at the Point Iroquois Lighthouse, then on to Sault Ste. Marie. No trouble getting thru Customs, not even much of a line. Then up highway 17 along the lake to Lake Superior P.P.

Agawa Bay was the first campground and well recommended by Joe and Karen. We found a site overlooking the lake... with a lot of help from the neighbors. They were from Illinos and come up every year. Very friendly.
